Description
Don’t Run Your Generator at Night Until You Check These 7 Things
Running a generator at night can keep the lights, refrigerator, furnace, or medical equipment working during an outage.
But nighttime use also makes it easier to miss problems until they become dangerous.
Before you leave a portable generator running after dark, there are **7 things you should check first**.
The biggest risk is carbon monoxide.
Portable generators should never be used inside a home, garage, basement, shed, porch, or carport. The CDC and CPSC recommend operating them **at least 20 feet away from the house**, with the exhaust pointed away from doors, windows, vents, and other occupied buildings.
You also need to check your carbon monoxide alarms.
If the generator is going to run while people are sleeping, working CO detectors with battery backup become even more important because carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and can build up without anyone noticing.
Then there’s the electrical side.
Extension cords should be heavy-duty, outdoor-rated, undamaged, and capable of handling the load. Never try to power your house by plugging a generator into a wall outlet with a male-to-male cord. That dangerous practice, known as **backfeeding**, can create a serious electrocution and fire risk.
Weather matters too.
Generators and electricity do not mix well with rain or standing water. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wet-weather operation and use only an approved open-sided generator cover or enclosure that still provides proper ventilation.
Fuel is another major nighttime hazard.
Never refill a running or hot generator. Shut it down and let it cool first because gasoline spilled onto hot engine components can ignite.
And finally, think about what happens if something goes wrong at 2 AM.
Is the generator overloaded? Is it stable? Are cords protected from damage? Is there enough fuel to safely run for the expected period? Can you hear an alarm if the generator shuts down or a CO detector activates?
In this video, we break down **7 things to check before running your generator overnight** so you can keep the power on without creating a bigger emergency.
The goal isn’t just keeping your house powered.
It’s making sure everyone inside wakes up safely.
