Description

You have probably seen the movie. Ia Drang as a bayonet charge and a hard-won victory. The Army's own after-action files tell a harder story, one that came far closer to disaster, and they do not stop where the film does. Almost exactly seventy two hours after the first helicopter touched down, a second column walked into an ambush the movie leaves out completely. This is those seventy two hours, hour by hour, from the Army's Center of Military History, Moore's after-action report, and the men who were there. Landing Zone X-Ray, where a single under-strength battalion set down almost on top of the enemy. The Lost Platoon, cut off overnight. The unarmed Huey crews who flew into fire the medevacs would not touch. The Broken Arrow call, and the friendly napalm that hit Moore's own command post. What actually held that clearing, roughly thirty three thousand artillery rounds and the first tactical B-52 strikes of the war, not the bayonet charge the film invents. And then Albany, the fight the movie skips, one of the worst single days of the entire war for an American unit. Every figure in this video is tied to a named source.
