Description
For a century, outsiders searched La Mosquitia for the City of the Monkey God.
The people who live there were never lost.
In 2012 a laser survey found the outlines of real ancient settlements under the canopy of northeast Honduras.
The legendary White City is another matter.
The lead archaeologist calls it a myth, and the 1940 expedition that made the Monkey God famous did not find ruins.
This film follows what is actually there now: the Miskito, Pech, Tawahka and Garifuna communities who hold legal title to more than 1.5 million hectares, a World Heritage site Honduras itself asked to put on the Danger List, a lobster industry that sends divers home paralyzed, and a proposed Indigenous reserve built to stop the clearing.

WHAT IS VERIFIED, WHAT IS NOT
The ancient settlements found by LiDAR in 2012 and visited in 2015 are documented in peer-reviewed work. The White City and Monkey God stories are legend and oral tradition, and the film treats them that way. Deforestation figures come from several organizations that do not agree with each other, so each one is attributed separately. The claim that most South American drug flights landed in the Mosquitia is an estimate, not an audited count. La Mosquitia is inhabited and governed by living communities, and the exact locations of the archaeological sites are not shown.
