Description
Declared extinct for 80 years. But hidden on one of the most extraordinary volcanic formations on Earth, something impossible was still alive.
Rising **562 meters (1,844 feet)** straight out of the Tasman Sea, **Ball's Pyramid** is a towering, blade-shaped volcanic sea stack located approximately 23 kilometers southeast of Australia's Lord Howe Island.
With sheer cliffs, no beaches, and almost nowhere to land, this isolated rock is one of the most difficult places on Earth to explore.
In 1918, a shipwreck introduced rats to Lord Howe Island, devastating its native wildlife. By 1920, the giant Lord Howe Island stick insect, nicknamed the **“tree lobster,”** had disappeared.
Scientists believed the species was extinct.
But in 2001, researchers discovered a tiny surviving population clinging to life beneath a single shrub on the nearly inaccessible cliffs of Ball's Pyramid.
For eight decades, this remarkable insect had survived where almost nothing else could.
**How did a species declared extinct survive on a volcanic rock in the middle of the ocean?**
