Description

A crested porcupine caught out in daylight on the Serengeti plain in northern Tanzania has one weapon, and it points backwards. 🦔🐆 🌅 Morning on a granite kopje. An olive baboon troop comes down off the rock it sleeps on and finds a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) still out after sunrise, digging beside the one rock gap where her pup is hidden. 🐒 A young olive baboon (Papio anubis) reaches in with his hand and learns the rule the hard way. ⚔️ The troop splits, works from above, and hauls her off the doorway by the one part of her with no quills on it. 🐆 Then a leopard (Panthera pardus) comes up the drainage line, takes down the smallest baboon, and turns on the porcupine from behind. 🔥 She runs backwards into it. Real crested porcupine and olive baboon behaviour in this episode: A crested porcupine cannot shoot its quills. The quills detach when they are driven into another animal, and each shaft carries tiny backward-facing barbs, so it goes in easily and works deeper with every movement. The defence is a movement, not a projectile: the porcupine raises its crest, rattles the hollow quills on its tail as a warning, turns its back and reverses hard into whatever ignores it. Below the quill line — legs, belly and muzzle — there is no armour at all. Olive baboons investigate with their hands, and a troop that is awake and together is dangerous enough that leopards take baboons almost only by ambush, and almost only when one is separated. A leopard that takes quills to the face can lose the ability to hunt.
