Description
About 1.5 to 2 kilos of rare earth magnets sit inside a typical electric car motor, and 94% of the world's sintered magnets are made in one country. In 2025, the supply slowed and a Ford factory in Chicago stopped. Now a new date is on the calendar: November 10, 2026.
In Hamilton, Ontario, a McMaster University spin-off called Enedym has built an electric motor with no magnets at all. Just steel, copper and software. Honda has invested, and magnet-free airport tractors are already pulling luggage.
The story runs from GM's magnet factory in Indiana, to Hydro-Québec's 1994 wheel motor, to TM4 in Boucherville, to the race between Tesla, BMW, ZF and Niron, and the rest of the supply chain from Saskatoon to Narva.
