Description
Building a massive luxury island out of 94 million cubic meters of loose ocean sand comes with a terrifying engineering flaw: liquefaction. If the ground isn't perfectly stabilized, the entire megaproject—along with its roads, villas, and hotels—could literally turn to soup and sink back into the sea.
In this documentary, we break down the extreme civil and marine engineering behind Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. Discover how massive dredging ships used GPS-guided "rainbowing" to spray the seabed into 17 crescent fronds, how an 11-kilometer rock shield was engineered to hold back the ocean, and how engineers used deep vibrocompaction to violently shake the loose sand into a solid, load-bearing foundation. We also explore the critical design mistakes made along the way, including stagnant tides and the complex construction of a 25-meter deep underwater tunnel.
