Description
Photo editing is entering a completely different era.
DxO recently released PhotoLab 10, a professional RAW editor that uses artificial intelligence to understand not only what is inside an image, but also where different elements are located in the scene.
Its new Depth Masks feature creates a depth map from a single photograph, allowing photographers to separately target the foreground, midground and background without requiring a depth sensor, LiDAR or a second camera.
DxO PhotoLab 10 also expands AI-powered masking.
The software can automatically detect people in a photo and create separate masks for individuals. It can even recognize specific facial features including eyes, eyebrows, irises, pupils, skin, lips, teeth and facial hair.
This means more of the repetitive technical work that previously required careful manual selections can now be automated.
But the bigger change is happening outside professional photography software.
The same idea is appearing in much simpler AI tools: instead of learning exactly how to perform an edit, the user simply tells the AI what needs to change.
For example, Alice AI allows users to upload a photograph and either describe the required edit or select a ready-made editing option. The system can change backgrounds, add elements or remove unwanted objects from an image.
So if there is an unwanted cable, object or detail in a photo, you no longer necessarily need to manually clone, mask and reconstruct the area yourself.
You can simply specify what should disappear and let the AI perform the technical work.
That points toward a major change in photography.
Professional software is becoming increasingly intelligent, while consumer AI tools are making advanced editing techniques accessible to people who have never used a complex photo editor.
The skill of the future may not only be knowing how to edit an image.
It may increasingly be knowing what you want the final image to look like — and how clearly you can explain that to AI.
What will matter more for the photographer of the future: mastering editing software or mastering how to communicate with AI?
