Description
Around 2,000 years ago, a remarkable burial took place near the village of Karanovo in Bulgaria.
Archaeologists discovered a wooden four-wheeled chariot buried alongside horse skeletons, in a burial associated with the ancient Thracians.
The chariot was decorated with bronze plates featuring mythological imagery, including Eros, a leaping panther and a mythical creature with the body of a panther and the tail of a dolphin.
Each of its four wheels was around 4 feet in diameter, making its large wheels one of the striking features of the discovery.
Even more remarkable was the preservation of the wooden components. Alongside the chariot, archaeologists found pottery, glass vessels and objects made from wood and leather.
The elaborate burial and the richness of the grave goods suggest that it was connected to a wealthy Thracian individual of high social status.
