Description

Ancient Canada reveals one of the strangest fossil discoveries ever made in the High Arctic: giant camel bones found on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, around 1,200 kilometres farther north than any camel fossil previously known. The discovery began with about 30 broken bone fragments collected from a remote slope on Ellesmere Island. After researchers scanned and reconstructed them, the pieces formed part of a large hind-leg bone. Collagen analysis later showed that the animal belonged to the camel family and lived roughly 3.5 million years ago. The reconstructed shin bone was around 29% larger than the equivalent bone in a modern camel, suggesting an enormous animal adapted to a very different Arctic than the one we know today. At the time, Ellesmere Island supported a boreal forest with larch trees, beavers, three-toed horses, deer-like mammals and bears. Because DNA was far too degraded to survive for millions of years, scientists identified the animal using collagen preserved inside the fossil. Its protein signature closely matched modern camels and giant fossil camels previously found in the Yukon. The discovery also raised a remarkable possibility. Wide feet, fat-storing humps and other features normally associated with desert camels may also have been useful in snowy northern environments with long periods of darkness and scarce winter food. Researchers have suggested that some classic camel adaptations may have developed in cold northern habitats before later proving useful in deserts, although this remains a hypothesis rather than a confirmed conclusion. In this video, we explore how giant camels reached the Canadian Arctic, what Ellesmere Island looked like 3.5 million years ago, how scientists identified an animal from only a few dozen bone fragments, and why this discovery changed the way researchers think about the origins of modern camels. #AncientCanada #CanadaHistory #PrehistoricCanada #Fossils #Paleontology ⚠️ Some visuals are illustrative.
