Description

Hieroglyphs seem to appear fully formed.. so where is the early writing that came before them? Joe Rogan and biblical scholar Dan McClellan discuss why Egyptian hieroglyphs look so developed when we first see them, and why McClellan thinks the earliest writing was probably on materials that deteriorated quickly. He explains how writing likely grew out of counting and receipts, and how inscriptions in the Sinai from roughly 1700-1900 BCE reworked Egyptian-looking signs so each one stood for a single sound. That shortcut cut hundreds of signs down to an alphabet of 22 to 30 letters, which spread through Phoenicia to nearly every alphabet on Earth except Korean Hangul. They also get into why translating ancient languages into English is far harder than it looks. If almost every alphabet on Earth traces back to one idea, who first came up with it? 💬 What do you think about how writing really began?
