📕 My honest car, ute & 4WD guides — buy the right one, then keep it alive 👉 https://aussiemechanicgreg.com There were two keys with this ute when it was new. There's one now. That is the first thing I look for on a ute that has come back through a finance company or an auction lane, because a bloke selling you his own ute goes and finds the spare. A lot of Australians got into a ute they could not hold onto, and those utes went somewhere. Four places, and only two of them are labelled. What surprised me is that the flood everybody expected never actually arrived — used ute values are still the strongest in the class — so the discount is not sitting on the price. It is sitting on the four months the thing spent standing still in a compound, and that is a completely different kind of buy. What I cover: - The four places a handed-back ute actually goes: the repossession lane, the dealer's trade row, the lease returns, and the mine road - Why the repo lane is busier but nowhere near a flood — 1,800 repossessions in a quarter against 1.3 million used sales in a half-year - The trade row nobody counts, and three paper-trail tells that reveal a quiet-loss ute: the service book that stops, the short rego, the recent one-owner change - Why a repossessed ute stands still for months before you see it — the 30-day default notice, the 14-day notice, the 21-day wait — and why that timeline is really a fault list - What standing still does to a modern diesel: sulphated battery, diesel bug in the tank, seized rear brakes, flat-spotted tyres, rodents in the air box, and a part-loaded DPF that never improves - What they actually cost right now, and why the average discount on a 1–5 year old used vehicle is 3.7%, not 30% - The $2 PPSR check that stops the worst thing that can happen to you, plus statutory versus repairable write-off and the 20–40% discount a repairable should carry - The three auction terms people bid straight past: buyer's premium, no cooling-off, sold as-is - Why an ex-government fleet ute or an ex-mine ute is often the best buy on the lot, and my five checks in order before you hand over a cent FACT-CHECK: Pickles reported about 1,800 repossessed vehicles received in Q1 2026, up from about 1,550 in Q4 2025 and about 1,500 in Q1 2025 (around 13% over six months), with repossessed volumes sold up about 33% across 2025 versus 2024. Manheim reported stock from financial institutions up 34% across 2025 while its fleet and lease channel fell about 28% year on year on lease extensions, and forecasts both channels lifting in 2026 with more ex-lease supply returning through the year. AADA and AutoGrab report 1,300,018 used vehicles sold in Australia in H1 2026, down 6.6% year on year, June down 16.2%; in June 51.1% of used vehicles aged 1–5 years had asking prices reduced before sale, average discounts widening to 3.7%, the highest recorded that year. Reported five-year residuals at 80,000km: Ranger Wildtrak about 66% and XLT about 65%, the strongest of any dual-cab on sale here; HiLux about 61–63%. Under the National Credit Code a default notice generally allows 30 days to remedy; a hardship variation may be requested at any time under section 72, with 21 days for the lender to respond; within 14 days of repossession the credit provider must give written notice of the estimated value of the goods and enforcement expenses and cannot sell until 21 days after that notice; any shortfall after sale remains owed. A PPSR search costs $2 at ppsr.gov.au and returns write-off and security-interest data where available. A statutory write-off cannot be re-registered anywhere in Australia; a repairable write-off may be after state re-inspection and an identity check, and typically sells 20–40% below clean title. Auction buyer's premiums commonly run 5–10%, more typically 5–7%, and must be disclosed; there is no cooling-off period at auction and vehicles are sold as-is without statutory warranty. Motoring-club pre-purchase inspections are commonly quoted at $150–$350. All prices, values, residuals, repair costs and discounts are indicative and vary by model, condition, state and week. DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT purchasing, mechanical, insurance, financial or legal advice. No auction house, dealer, finance company, fleet operator or manufacturer named or referred to here is accused of any wrongdoing; repossession, auction and remarketing are described as ordinary, publicly documented legal and trade processes, and the figures quoted are those the businesses concerned have published about their own operations. Credit law, write-off categories, roadworthy requirements and auction terms differ between states — check the rules where you are buying. Always run a PPSR check, read the auction terms in full, and have a qualified mechanic carry out a pre-purchase inspection before you hand over any money.
