Description
When it comes to units getting attention for their covert operations, a lot of the time it's the US Navy's SEALs, the Delta Force, or the British SAS. But one Tier 1 counterterrorism unit that operates in near obscurity is Canada's Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2).
JTF2 was created on April 1st, 1993, after the national counterterrorism mandate was transferred from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) of the RCMP to the Canadian Armed Forces, with the intent from inception of being a precision strike force for high-risk hostage rescues, direct action and covert reconnaissance. The unit was initially composed of elite units such as the Canadian Airborne Regiment and the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and embodied a legendary discipline, under the operational motto Facta Non Verba (Deeds, Not Words).
JTF2 candidates face an attrition rate of more than 70 percent, as they go through a vicious physical screening, stringent psychological tests, close range battle and cold weather survival course, all geared towards cold war warfare. During the early years of the war in Afghanistan, Task Force K-Bar confirmed its operational capability during the war, receiving the United States Presidential Unit Citation with coalition special forces.
This video explores the quiet professionals, their doctrine, their rigorous selection and strategic effect in Canada's history.
