Description
In 1962, a wounded Indian rifleman became the center of one of the most enduring stories of the Sino-Indian War. Popular accounts say that he held off Chinese forces for around 72 hours, using multiple firing positions to create the impression of a much larger Indian force. When the fighting ended, later accounts claimed that the Chinese took his head and eventually returned it along with a bust made in his honor. Some of these details are part of local folklore and remain disputed.
This video tells the story of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, and the Battle of Nuranang during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. On 17 November 1962, Rawat, Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi and Rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain volunteered to attack a Chinese MMG position that had been brought within close range of the Indian defences. The three soldiers crawled forward under fire, attacked the position with grenades, and captured the MMG. Jaswant Singh Rawat was then fatally hit by enemy fire while returning toward the Indian trench.
In this documentary, you will discover:
How a rejected 17-year-old recruit eventually joined the Indian Army
The real documented details of the grenade assault that captured the Chinese MMG
How the Battle of Nuranang became associated with the legend of Jaswant Singh Rawat
The popular stories surrounding Sela and Nura, the two Monpa girls linked to the legend
Why Jaswantgarh became one of the most famous military memorials in the Tawang sector
The daily traditions associated with Jaswant Singh Rawat's memory
How the Battle of Nuranang became an important episode of the 1962 war
The figure of around 300 Chinese casualties is often associated with the Battle of Nuranang, but contemporary retellings and historical accounts describe this as approximately 300 Chinese soldiers killed or wounded during the operation—not as a confirmed number personally killed by Jaswant Singh Rawat.
Jaswant Singh Rawat was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. The 4th Garhwal Rifles received the Battle Honour “Nuranang,” and Jaswantgarh today remains a site of remembrance for the soldiers who fought there.
Some elements of the Jaswantgarh story—such as the 72-hour lone stand, the three-position deception, the role of Sela and Nura, the circumstances of Rawat's final moments, and the reported return of his head and bust—exist in popular or local accounts and should be understood in that context. Different sources give different versions of these events.
