Description

In 1978 a lab technician in Brooklyn skipped a step, a rabbit artery relaxed when it should have tightened, and that accident led to a Nobel Prize for discovering nitric oxide, the gas your arteries use to open up. The same pathway powers circulation and intimacy, and the FDA approved Viagra the same year the prize was awarded. In this video we look at five everyday fruits with real human research behind them: watermelon (citrulline), blueberries, oranges, pomegranate, and cocoa, the fruit almost nobody counts. You'll hear why erection problems showed up an average of 38.8 months before chest pain in a study of 300 heart patients, why a half cup of blueberries a day did nothing in a six-month trial while a full cup improved artery function, why the fruit link in a study of 25,096 men only held for men under 70, how a pomegranate juice company lost in federal court, and what Panama's Kuna islanders taught a Harvard doctor about cocoa and blood pressure. We also cover how to prepare each fruit (watermelon rind, whole oranges, natural vs. Dutch-processed cocoa) and who should avoid them or talk to a doctor first: grapefruit with sildenafil, statins and blood pressure medication; pomegranate with sildenafil or warfarin; extra potassium with kidney disease, spironolactone, ACE inhibitors or ARBs; and heavy metals in dark chocolate. This video is for general education and is not medical advice. If you take prescription medication, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before changing your diet. #HealthyAging #BloodCirculation #NitricOxide #SeniorHealth #HeartHealth REFERENCES Furchgott RF, Zawadzki JV.
