Description
What was the largest flying Dinosaur in Earth's history?
Most people have never heard of it.
Its name was Quetzalcoatlus, and it was one of the strangest animals that ever lived. With a wingspan of around 10 to 11 metres, a standing height similar to a giraffe, and a body plan unlike any flying animal alive today, Quetzalcoatlus seems like something that should not have been able to exist.
But it did.
For millions of years, this giant pterosaur soared over late Cretaceous North America in the same world as T. rex, Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Edmontosaurus, and Pachycephalosaurus.
So how did something this large actually fly?
In this video, we break down the science behind Quetzalcoatlus, including its discovery in Big Bend National Park, its enormous size, its hollow bones, its membrane wings, its thermal soaring strategy, and the explosive vault launch that may have allowed it to get airborne from the ground.
Quetzalcoatlus was not a giant bird.
It was not a giant bat.
It was a pterosaur with a biological toolkit so specialised that nothing alive today comes close to replicating it.
And when it landed, it did not simply skim the ocean like a giant seagull. The current evidence suggests it may have been a terrestrial stalker, walking across floodplains on all fours and using its long beak to snatch prey from the ground.
Then, 66 million years ago, the asteroid hit.
Every pterosaur lineage vanished. Birds survived, but they never replaced pterosaurs at the very top end of flying animal size. For 66 million years, the record set by Quetzalcoatlus has remained untouched.
The largest flying animal in Earth's history solved problems that should have made its existence impossible.
And nothing since has broken its record.
