Description
In the 1990s, the Ford Explorer became one of America’s most popular SUVs.
But beneath thousands of them was a problem.
Reports began accumulating of Firestone tires suddenly losing their tread—sometimes at highway speeds. When the tire failed, drivers could lose control, and some Explorers rolled over.
By May 2000, NHTSA had opened an investigation. Three months later, Firestone announced a recall covering approximately 14.4 million tires.
But investigators discovered something even more troubling: warning signs hadn’t appeared overnight. Ford had already replaced Firestone tires on vehicles in foreign markets beginning in 1999, and warranty claims involving some of the tires had risen years earlier. At the time, U.S. law didn’t require foreign recall actions to be reported to NHTSA.
The fallout eventually helped produce the TREAD Act, signed into law on November 1, 2000, strengthening reporting requirements designed to help regulators spot dangerous patterns sooner. Those early-warning requirements still exist today.
This is the story of the Ford Explorer, Firestone tires—and the warnings America didn’t see in time.
Take a detour into the unbelievable.
