The most important discovery may not be what archaeologists found in Florida. It may be what the ground revealed about the people history nearly erased.
For generations, the Seminole story was told through wars, famous chiefs, and the struggle to resist American expansion. But beneath Florida's soil lie traces of something more complicated: settlements built by people escaping slavery, communities where Black and Native Americans lived alongside one another, and fortifications that became symbols of freedom.
Some were destroyed. Others disappeared beneath forests and farmland. And when archaeologists began finding their remains, the evidence raised a difficult question.
What if the story of the Seminole was never just one story at all?
