Every October a wall somewhere in America turns orange, and almost nobody knows what is actually sitting on it. The beetle covering that siding is Harmonia axyridis, it comes from eastern Asia, and it is here because people deliberately brought it. This is the story of the only animal the United States imported on purpose twice: once in 1888, when roughly 514 vedalia beetles from Adelaide saved the California citrus industry for about $1,500 and created the entire science of biological control, and once again from 1916 onward, when a bigger, hungrier generalist was released over and over until it finally took hold near Abita Springs, Louisiana, in 1988. In this video: what a ladybug actually is under 800 years of cartoon, why it bleeds from its knees and what is dissolved in that blood, how its wings fold like a carpenter's tape measure, the radar data that caught ladybirds flying at 3,600 feet, how the nine-spotted ladybug disappeared from New York for 29 years, why 1 million liters of Ontario wine went down the drain in 2001, and the wasp that leaves a living ladybug standing guard over its cocoon, twitching, for two weeks, before one in four of them walks away.
