Description

The lake cracks under your feet. You drop into dark water, gasp and reach for the edge. Your hands keep slipping. Dr Gordon Giesbrecht's 1-10-1 rule is an approximate memory aid: about 1 minute of cold shock, around 10 minutes before effective movement is lost, and roughly 1 hour before hypothermia-related unconsciousness. These times vary. Drowning can happen much sooner, so keep your airway clear and use your early movement to get out. Turn back toward the ice you came from. Place your arms on the unbroken edge, kick your legs flat behind you and slide out. Stay low and roll away from the hole, then get to warm, dry shelter and seek medical help. This lake and its people are imagined. The timing is compressed.
