Description

Did you know the Philippines is full of Spanish last names?  Here's why. Back in the 1800s during Spanish rule, Spain had a major problem in the Philippines. Filipinos didn’t have a standardized way of using surnames! Some people used their clan names, some used personal nicknames, and some even changed names to avoid taxes, which made Spain struggle to identify people and manage the population. So in 1849, Governor General Narciso Clavería issued the Clavería Decree, also known as the Catalogo Alfabético de Apellidos. This decree assigned surnames to every Filipino family so Spain could record, tax, and identify everyone properly. As a result, Spanish surnames became common across the Philippines - but having one doesn’t mean having Spanish blood. Most were simply assigned and not inherited. #philippines #interesting #facts #interestingfacts #filipino #didyouknow #culture #history #philippinehistory #surnamehistory
