Description
In this video, I’m doing a deep-clean of the outdoor unit on a mini-split heat pump.
Outdoor units are exposed to the elements year-round, so over time they can collect dust, grass, soot, dirt, and grime. A dirty outdoor coil and fan can restrict airflow and make the system work harder, which is why regular cleaning is an important part of maintaining your mini-split heat pump.
Cleaning your Mini-Split saves money by being the most efficient it can. Dirty coils and heat- exchange surfaces do not accept or reject heat easily. The compressor will have to work harder (and for longer run-times) to achieve the same efficiency when coils are dirty. This uses more electricity. But the solution is relatively quick and easy. A thorough cleaning every couple of years ensures that the mini-split accepts or rejects heat easily, thus reducing run times to their minimum. This saves you money!
I’ll take you through the process step by step, including:
Turning the power off safely
Disassembling the outdoor unit
Removing built-up dirt and debris
Applying cleaning spray/foam
Thoroughly rinsing the unit
Reassembling everything
Restoring power and testing the heat pump
For many homes, giving the outdoor unit a thorough cleaning about every two years can be a good maintenance interval. If your unit is exposed to particularly dirty conditions, such as dust, grass clippings, soot, or other debris, it may need to be cleaned more frequently.
The goal is a clean outdoor coil, better airflow, and a heat pump that can operate efficiently.
If you have a mini-split heat pump, take a look at your outdoor unit—you might be surprised how much dirt has accumulated inside!
