Description
A priest who has lost his temple. A throne on wheels. And rims covered in eyes, all looking back at him.
In 593 BC, Ezekiel is an exile by the Chebar canal in Babylon, far from the temple where he was meant to serve. Then the heavens open. The strangest vision in the Old Testament follows, with four-faced living creatures, wheels within wheels, and rims "full of eyes."
But what are the eyes for? This video follows the question through Ezekiel's book. It begins with a sentence the elders of Jerusalem were whispering in the dark, then traces the glory of God as it slowly leaves the temple. It ends with the detail that changes how you read the whole vision: the throne was already in Babylon.
What you'll discover:
Why Ezekiel's priestly calling makes the timing of this vision so striking
The whispered words of Jerusalem's elders, and how the wheels may answer them
The man in linen with a writing kit, and the mark on the foreheads of those who grieve
Why the departure of God's glory is described so slowly
What the order of the visions reveals about where the throne went
How Zechariah, Revelation, and the Lamb with seven eyes connect to the same image
Key Scripture in this video
The vision
Ezekiel 1:1-3: the date, the opened heavens, and the hand of the Lord
Ezekiel 1:4-14: the storm, the fire, and the four living creatures
Ezekiel 1:15-21: the wheels, the rims "full of eyes," and the spirit in the wheels
Ezekiel 1:22-28: the crystal expanse, the sapphire throne, and "the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord"
The whisper in Jerusalem
Ezekiel 8:3-18: the Spirit lifts Ezekiel by a lock of his hair, and he sees the idol, the hidden chamber, Tammuz, and sun worship
Ezekiel 8:12 and 9:9: "The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land"
Mercy and judgment
Ezekiel 9:1-6: the six executioners, the man in linen, and the mark on those who sigh and groan
Ezekiel 10:12: the cherubim's whole bodies "full of eyes"
The glory departs
Ezekiel 10:18-19: the glory moves from the threshold to the east gate
Ezekiel 11:22-23: the glory rises and stands on the mountain east of the city
Ezekiel 10:15, 10:20: "the same living creatures I had seen by the River Chebar"
Ezekiel 11:16: "I have been a sanctuary to them for a little while" in the lands where they had gone
The eyes across Scripture
2 Chronicles 16:9
Proverbs 15:3
Zechariah 4:10
Revelation 4:6-8 and 5:6: the living creatures full of eyes, and the Lamb with seven eyes, "the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth"
The return
Ezekiel 43:1-5: the glory returns from the east, "like the vision I had seen by the River Chebar"
Ezekiel 48:35: "The Lord Is There"
Note on interpretation: This video separates what Scripture states from what it suggests. Connecting the eyes to the elders' whisper is an interpretation, since the text never says it outright. The link to Babylonian guardian figures is a scholarly theory. The alternative reading of the Hebrew word ayin (eye, or gleam) is also discussed.
