Description

Do ants know they're alive? Inside the ant colony: ant brain science, insect consciousness, ant war, ant surgery, and why the queen ant has never given a single order in her life. An ant holds out its own leg so a nestmate can bite it off, and does not struggle. A wounded ant limps harder when it is being watched. A dying ant walks away from everyone it has ever known so it can die alone in an empty corner. And a fungus seizes total control of an ant's body while carefully leaving the brain intact, and appears to be protecting it on purpose. Every one of those is documented, peer-reviewed science. None of it fits the picture you were handed: a tiny machine with six legs, marching in a line because a queen underground told it to. In this video, we walk through the evidence for and against a mind inside an ant. Desert ants that count their own footsteps and misjudge the distance home when researchers glue stilts to their legs. Rock ants that meet the formal scientific definition of teaching, complete with a pupil who taps the teacher when she's ready. Matabele ants that carry their wounded off a battlefield and run a triage system decided by the dying rather than the rescuer. And the 2024 discovery that Florida carpenter ants perform real amputations, choosing whether to cut based on exactly where the wound sits. Then we take the whole thing apart with a 1958 experiment that still humiliates every romantic reading of ant behaviour. How does a brain smaller than a grain of salt, holding 250,000 neurons, keep a working map of its own body? Why does a wounded ant exaggerate its injury when nestmates are nearby? If an ant holds still while its leg is removed, what does that tell us about insect pain? And if a colony can reach a decision with no ant in charge, what exactly is your own brain doing, with 86 billion neurons and nobody at the wheel? Drop a comment: What's the smallest animal you'd still feel bad about killing? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ IS ANYONE HOME? THE CONSCIOUSNESS DEBATE ▸ Barron, A.
