Chips (1977): 16 Unscripted Moments You Never Knew

Chips (1977), Erik Estrada, Larry Wilcox Two motorcycles. Mirrored sunglasses. A theme song that still plays in your head the second you hear the word "freeway." Which show made an entire generation believe the freeway was the coolest place on earth? CHiPs. NBC, 1977, produced by MGM. Two California Highway Patrol officers, three big set pieces per episode, and about one week to shoot all of it. Erik Estrada was Ponch — the grin, the charm, the trouble. Larry Wilcox was Jon Baker — the Marine, the straight man, the calm. Robert Pine was Sergeant Getraer — the boss who had to survive both of them. It ran like clockwork. Every chase was scheduled. Every crash was rehearsed. Every punchline was written down. Which is exactly why the moments nobody planned are the best part. A fake motorcycle cop who ended up chased down by real ones. An episode filmed inside a real world championship.
