Description

At 67, retirement looked nothing like what I had planned. My apartment in America had climbed to $2,400 a month, which was more than the $2,200 I received from retirement each month. Add groceries, insurance, transportation, and everyday costs, and I was pulling more from my savings every single month. So I started looking beyond the United States. That search led me to the Philippines, where I rented a simple house for about $350 a month. But a $350 house was not the same as my old American apartment. There were brownouts, roosters at dawn, heat, insects, and a basic kitchen. For a while, I wondered if I had gone too far in trying to save money. Then I nearly made the opposite mistake. In this story, I share how I went from a $2,400 apartment in America to a simpler life in the Philippines, what my retirement budget really looks like, and what I finally understood: retirement isn’t about finding the cheapest place to live. It’s about building a life you can afford to keep living. If you’re thinking about retirement, moving abroad, or living in the Philippines, I hope my experience gives you something to think about.
