At highly sacred Buddhist sites—such as the Ruwanweli Maha Seya—one may witness the offering of 84,000 bowls of milk-rice at once. The reason for this is to commemorate the 84,000 *Dhamma-skandhas* (divisions of the Buddha’s teachings) as expounded by the Lord Buddha. Similarly, Emperor Ashoka constructed 84,000 *viharas* (monasteries/temples) to honor these same 84,000 *Dhamma-skandhas*. Furthermore, preparing 84,000 bowls of milk-rice is not a task that can be accomplished by an individual alone; it requires the collective effort of a large group of people. This collaborative participation amplifies the merit generated, transforming the event into a profound act of virtue. Can the milk-rice be consumed after the *Buddha-puja* (offering to the Buddha) has concluded? Yes, it certainly can be consumed. Once the offering has been presented to the Lord Buddha and left in place for about fifteen to twenty minutes, it is appropriate to offer the primary bowl of milk-rice to a Buddhist monk or an elder from the community. Furthermore, it is appropriate to distribute the 84,000 bowls of milk-rice offerings among those present and all the villagers for consumption.
