Description

What Happened to Roman Soldiers When They Became Too Old to Fight? Picture a man at a fort gate on the Rhine. He is forty-five. His shoulder never healed right, his knees ache, and he has spent twenty-five years in the Roman army. Today is discharge day, and Rome is about to hand him a fortune. So what does an empire do with a soldier whose body has given out? Rome had no pension before Augustus, and its old soldiers had a habit of following whichever general would pay them. Then one emperor turned retirement into law. This video follows what that cost, who paid for it, and what happened to the men who walked out of the gate. Along the way we cover the bronze plate that could turn a foreigner into a Roman, the army's ban on soldiers marrying, the sacred bank that sat under the battle standards, and one colony in Britain that went up in flames. Stay to the end for the one sentence from Suetonius that explains why Rome paid its old soldiers to leave. If you enjoy the human side of Roman history more than the textbook version, subscribe and come along for the next one. And tell me in the comments: would you have taken the money, or stayed in the army? — DISCLAIMER — Do not use this video as your only source of information.
