Mukbang (먹방), which roughly translates to “eating broadcast,” started in South korea as a simple concept: people eating enormous meals on camera while thousands watched along. But as the genre exploded across China, bigger portions, longer streams, and increasingly dangerous challenges became a way for creators to stand out. In August 2026, 24 year old Chinese mukbanger Yingying (干饭莹莹) died just three days after revealing dangerously low potassium levels and warning her 1.3 million followers to put their health before money. Her death reignited conversations around China’s extreme mukbang and livestream culture, bringing back stories of other creators who pushed their bodies to the limit for an audience.
