Description
In 1850, strange knocking began inside a priest's house in the tiny French village of Cideville.
Then objects reportedly began moving on their own.
Furniture shifted. Tools fell without being touched. Witnesses claimed mysterious knocks could answer questions, count numbers and even reproduce music.
But the strangest part of the Cideville Poltergeist case came next.
The haunting went to court.
In 1851, a legal dispute involving parish priest Father Tinel and a shepherd named Thorel forced witnesses to stand before a judge and describe what they claimed to have seen inside the Cideville presbytery.
Farmers, priests, investigators and local residents gave testimony about unexplained noises, flying objects and apparently impossible movement. Others saw absolutely nothing, and at least one witness suspected trickery.
The court never declared the house haunted.
It never proved that spirits were responsible.
Instead, after hearing the extraordinary testimony, the cause of the disturbances remained unknown.
Was the Cideville Poltergeist an elaborate hoax, mass suggestion, village superstition… or one of history's strangest unexplained paranormal cases?
Tonight on Bedtime Myths and Mysteries, we return to Normandy and investigate the remarkable true story of the ghost that went to court.
