Description

You let go of the rocket above Uranus, fall through its clouds, then jump to Neptune and do it again. Your suit holds up to anything, so you get to feel all of it: the coldest air measured on any planet, thin methane clouds, Neptune's 2,100 km/h winds, and then the deep, where theory says it rains diamonds. Neither planet has a ground. At the bottom there is nothing to land on. Only one spacecraft has ever visited these planets: Voyager 2, in 1986 (Uranus) and 1989 (Neptune). Nothing has gone into either atmosphere. So the meter shows depth below the 1-bar level (the zero point, since there is no surface), gravity, pressure and temperature, and every value below the top cloud deck is modelled and labelled. Diamond rain is a hypothesis from lab experiments and was never observed, and the screen says so. Time is sped up. The suit and the cat are made up. You weigh less than at home on Uranus (0.89 g) and more on Neptune (1.12 g). 0:00 The rocket and the cat 0:14 Uranus 1: The drop in 0:42 Uranus 2: The cold top 1:04 Uranus 3: Methane clouds 1:42 Uranus 4: Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide 2:17 Uranus 5: Hydrosulfide and water clouds 2:52 Uranus 6: Where the data ends 3:17 Uranus 7: The deep ocean 3:54 Uranus 8: Diamond rain 4:34 Neptune 1: The drop in 5:02 Neptune 2: The fastest winds 5:40 Neptune 3: Methane and ammonia 6:12 Neptune 4: The water level 6:42 Neptune 5: Where the data ends 7:04 Neptune 6: The deep ocean 7:37 Neptune 7: Diamond rain 8:14 There is no surface #WhatIf #Uranus #Neptune #Space #Planets
