Description
In 2022, archaeologists discovered an unusual 17th-century burial in the village of Pien, Poland.
The skeleton belonged to a young woman whose burial included an iron sickle placed across her neck and a padlock attached to the big toe of her left foot.
Researchers believe these objects were intended to prevent the dead from returning. In parts of Eastern Europe, certain deceased people were feared as potentially dangerous revenants, sometimes associated with traditions involving beings such as the upiór or strzyga.
The sickle may have been positioned to restrain the body, while the lock could have symbolized the final closure of the woman’s life and her inability to return.
A silk cap found near her head may also suggest that she held a relatively elevated social position.
Such practices were not evidence of supernatural activity. Instead, they likely reflected cultural fears surrounding sudden deaths, mysterious illnesses and people who were viewed as socially different.
