Description

Alexander the Great may be one of the most iconic figures in all of history and the Alexander Mosaic is arguably his most famous depiction. However, this mosaic can give us some insight to the way propaganda has been used to alter our perceptions. Discovered in The House of the Faun in Pompeii and preserved for millenia, the mosaic depicts the battle of Issus, Alexander's decisive victory of Persian King Darius III. The victory serves as a perfect vessel for ancient propaganda. I discuss the context and symbolism of the work as well as its importance and why this depiction may not be the real Alexander at all. If you enjoyed this video, you'll also enjoy my other propaganda breakdowns all compiled in this playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZdDLazJ0YRR3DnBuqIWnn43mM8x52bXw AI disclosure- As you probably know by now, AI commentary is taking over youtube and so channels like mine feel the need to specify our usage. I use AI exclusively for fact checking and source investigation as well as finding relevant Images (non ai) to show. Images used from public domain sites such as Wikimedia commons.
