Description

In 1928, legendary fisherman and author Zane Grey reported seeing a massive yellowish shark estimated to be 35–40 feet long near Rangiroa. Grey insisted the animal was not a whale shark, describing its blunt head, unusual color, and deliberate predatory movement. Five years later, his son Loren Grey reportedly encountered another enormous yellowish shark with remarkably similar characteristics in the Pacific. The discovery of the megamouth shark in 1976 proved that enormous, previously unknown sharks could remain hidden from science for generations. Could Grey's mysterious shark have been something unknown, or was it simply a rare misidentification that became one of the ocean's enduring mysteries?
