Every plant here cost more to take out than it cost to put in. One took me three full seasons, and I still find it.
And every one of them was a good decision when I made it. That's the part that still bothers me.
These aren't the obvious ones. Not mint. Not the thing your neighbor warned you about. Every one behaved perfectly for two or three years - tidy clump, good flowers, stayed where I put it. Then somewhere in year four it stopped being a plant I owned and became a plant I was managing.
🍂 WHY FALL IS WHEN YOU DO THIS
The soil is soft after the first rains, so roots come up whole instead of snapping. The leaves are still on, so you can see what you're pulling. And anything you disturb has months of cold ahead of it instead of a summer to recover in.
🏷️ HOW TO SPOT THIS TYPE BEFORE YOU BUY IT
One kind of line on a label should stop you every time: vigorous ground cover. Excellent for difficult areas. Rapid spreader. Naturalizes easily. Those aren't descriptions. They're warnings, written by somebody who has to sell the plant.
And the simpler test - ask whoever is selling it: how do I get rid of it? If the answer is anything other than "you dig it up," put it back on the bench.
⚠️ IN THIS ONE
The plant where digging it over doesn't remove it - it plants it, and the thing about the variegated form that nobody mentions at the till. Why harvesting horseradish is the same act as planting it. The one that's illegal to sell in some states and was seeded along the highways by the government in the fifties. The plant more of you have written to me about than anything I've ever named - and the honest case for and against it. And the ground cover that spreads through your other plants rather than around them.
