Description
"After a bottle of wine and a brandy, Allan and I returned to work on a song." — Roger Cook, on the day in June 1971 that "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" was written.
A full blues rock rendition of "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" (The Hollies, 1972), with complete lyrics on screen. Acoustic guitar, weeping electric lead and tight drums. Archival footage from Vietnam and the United States, 1972–1973. A song from The World, released the year the ground war ended.

📜 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
In June 1971, two songwriters in London went out for lunch near Marble Arch. Allan Clarke, lead singer of the Hollies, and lyricist Roger Cook came back with an idea: New York during Prohibition, an FBI man in a speakeasy, a raid, and a woman in a black dress. Clarke later said it took about five minutes to write.
The Hollies were famous for three-part harmonies. This song has none, just one gritty voice over a swamp rock groove so American that many listeners were sure it was Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was a band from Manchester.
It was released in the spring of 1972.
By then, fewer than 70,000 Americans were still in Vietnam, and only about 6,000 of them were combat troops. On March 30, 1972, the Easter Offensive began. Men in country called home "The World," and they were counting the days until the Freedom Bird took them back to it.
On August 11, 1972, near Da Nang, the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry handed over Hill 260 and stood down. It was the last U.S. ground combat battalion in Vietnam.
That September, "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, the Hollies' biggest hit in America. By then, the man singing it had already left the band. He came back the following year.
On January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. troops left Vietnam.
Some came home to a country where this song was still on the radio. More than 58,000 never came home at all.
This one is for everyone who served.
Welcome home.
