Join My Discord: https://discord.gg/kQggurk This is the story of aerosucre flight 142. Ive been making videos on youtube for about 7 years, yeah its been that long and over that time ive covered over 400 crashes. I think its absolutely incredible that ive gone this long without covering aerosucre, the airline is a meme in the aviation community and for good reason. If i google your airline and one of the most watched videos about your airline is a compilation of risky takeoffs then you have a safety problem. The top comment on one of these videos says “For Aerosucre pilots, hearing the GPWS is like hearing an alarm clock in the morning” while thats funny it highlights how the airline views safety. The cavalier attitude towards safety has come back to bite the airline multiple times, you might be aware of aerosucre flight 157 where a 727 ploughed through an airport fence and a shed only to lose power and crash, but there are a littany of other crashes that are far less known this is one of those stories. On the evening of the 18th of november 2006 at the Eldorado airport in bogota an aerosucre boeing 727 was getting ready for the flight to leticia. With 5 crewmembers on board,The plane was transporting about 40000 lbs of cargo and the pilots were running checks before they set out. With all the checks checking out the pilots took the plane to runway 13R and the tri jet took off into the skies of bogota. The flight went off without a hitch, it was smooth sailing. As the plane flew over the colombian country side and into the forest the pilots got in contact with the controllers at leticia. The controllers cleared the plane all the to the waypoint pabon. The pilots inquired about the weather at leticia, they had 10 kilomters or 6 miles of visibility, they also had scattered clouds at 1000 and 20,000 feet. They acknowledged the weather information and told the controllers that they would hail them when the plane reached the waypoint pabon. Once at pabon the pilots needed to take the plane down and they asked if they could be cleared for 19000 feet, it was all good with the controllers and so the plane left flight level 270. The plane was now 82 miles from the airport and the pilots were starting to think about how they would be getting the plane into the airport, they wanted to do a straight in approach to runway 21 and approach control was all good with that. All the pilots had to do now was to line the plane up and then let the approach control know that they were at 3000 feet and that they had the runway in sight. But as the 727 maneuvered above the dense rainforests of colombia, patches of fog started to roll over the airport. As the plane was getting onto final the visibility had dropped from 10 kilometers to 4 kilometers or 2.49 miles. The pilots knew that they could handle this and opted to continue with the approach. The plane then gets on the final and starts to head towards the airport. Or so they think Flight 142 reported that it was on final at an altitude of 3000 feet and 9 miles from the runway. At this point the runway should be right in front of them like a lit up christmas tree, but nothing all they saw was fog, they asked the controllers if they could up the intensity of the runway lights, as the runway lights get up to their brightest the runway could be seen through the fog, at this point they were handed off from the approach control to the tower. The tower told them to continue the approach .now, the wind was calm and the pilots were informed that the the displaced threshold of the runway was 220 meters down the runway and that they had about 1880 meters or about 6000 feet of runway. The pillots also asked the controllers to up the intensity of the lights and the controllers told the pilots that the lights were as bright as they can get. The controllers now concerned asked the pilots if they had the runway in sight, the pilots just said yes. The controller could not see the jet and even with the fog the controller should be able to see the lights of the approaching plane, so he radios the plane to see where theyre at, the pilots tell the controller that theyre 3 miles away and that they have their landing lights off as the lights are making it too
