Description

In April 1972, live TV caught John Young's boot ripping the cable off a heat probe Charlie Duke had just pushed into the lunar soil, and that probe never sent back a single reading. The probes buried at Apollo 15 and 17 kept reporting from under the ground until NASA cut the feed in 1977, and by then the soil around them had been warming for years. We go through why astronauts drilled thermometers into the Moon in the first place, Dave Scott's jammed drill on Apollo 15, and the day NASA shut down all five Apollo science stations while the Apollo 17 probes were still returning accurate results. Then the tapes, more than 5,000 of them withdrawn in the early 1980s, the 440 that survived, and the weekly logs that let Seiichi Nagihara's team rebuild the missing years. When the restored data came out in 2018, the warming turned out to have a very human cause, and NASA's own 2011 guidance now treats those same footprints as artifacts to protect. We also look at LISTER, the heat probe that went down on the Blue Ghost lander in 2025, and one anomaly at 230 centimeters that nobody has explained. The last section, on what might still be down there, is speculation, and we say so in the video.
