Description

In the years following World War Two, the US Navy continued investigating how to better protect pilots and crew during crash landings — a problem that had cost countless lives during the war itself. In 1946, researchers deliberately rammed a TBM Avenger into a barrier of sandbags to test a new nylon crash harness design on a crash test dummy. Unlike earlier rigid strap systems that concentrated impact force into narrow lines across the body — a major cause of injury even in otherwise survivable crashes — the nylon vest was designed to stretch under load, distributing roughly 54g of force across a much wider area of the torso instead of a few thin straps. This kind of load-spreading principle would go on to influence the development of modern restraint systems, long before seatbelts and shoulder harnesses became standard in commercial aviation and automobiles. It's a small, largely forgotten experiment that helped shape how we think about crash safety today. #ww2rebuilder #military #memes #wwii #worldwarii #worldwar2 #history #historyfacts #historyshorts #historia #historical #ww2history #ww2facts #usnavy #tbmavenger #aviationsafety #crashtest #militaryhistory #documentary #education #engineering #technology #historylovers #fyp #edit #warthunder #phonk #memes #didyouknow
