Chimpanzees are highly social primates that rely on close relationships to navigate life within their communities. Physical contact is an important part of their social behavior, and interactions such as hugging, grooming, and sitting close together can help strengthen bonds between individuals. These connections play a significant role in maintaining cooperation and social stability within a group.
Grooming is one of the most common ways chimpanzees maintain their relationships. Although it helps remove dirt, parasites, and debris from their fur, its social function is equally important. Chimpanzees often spend considerable time grooming preferred companions, and these interactions can help reinforce existing relationships. Research has also linked social grooming in chimpanzees to the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with social bonding.
Hugging and other forms of physical contact can also provide reassurance during stressful situations. Researchers have observed chimpanzees embracing and comforting one another following conflicts, particularly when individuals share close social bonds. Such interactions may help reduce distress and restore social harmony. However, not every embrace has the same meaning, and understanding a specific interaction requires considering the animals' relationship and the surrounding circumstances.
Interestingly, chimpanzees can form lasting social relationships that share several characteristics with human friendships. They recognize familiar individuals, develop preferences for certain companions, and maintain connections through repeated positive interactions. These behaviors highlight the complexity of chimpanzee social lives and demonstrate how physical affection can contribute to relationships among our closest living evolutionary relatives.
