Description
In 1803, two American diplomats went to Paris to buy one city. They came home with a territory larger than Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal combined, because a slave rebellion in Haiti had wrecked Napoleon's plans for an American empire.
That one deal says a lot about how the United States rose. This video traces the full history of the United States, from the lost colony of Roanoke to the end of the Cold War. It asks whether America's rise was an accident, a destiny, or something more complicated: a pattern in which other nations' crises kept opening doors, and the country's choices about what to do next shaped who benefited and who paid.
What this covers:
- Early European colonization, Roanoke, Jamestown, and the rise of tobacco and slavery
- The French and Indian War, the colonial tax revolt, and the American Revolution
- How the French alliance helped win independence
- The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution
- The Louisiana Purchase, Indian Removal and the Trail of Tears
- The Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush
- Slavery, the Civil War, and the debate over its death toll
- The Gilded Age, the Spanish-American War, and the rise of American empire
- World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II
- The Cold War and the end of the Soviet Union
This documentary is based on historical sources, documented events, and historical research. We bring the past to life while remaining faithful to the historical record.
