Description
Typeless turns messy thoughts into clear and polished writing, and is now available on Linux. It helps developers to speak to AI agents with detailed prompts and context effortlessly, across browsers, terminals, IDEs, and other apps.Try Typeless: https://www.typeless.com/?via=1003
AI coding agents like OpenAI Codex can write code, fix bugs, and handle complex development tasks. But why are we still typing long prompts to tell them what to do?
What if you could simply talk through a coding problem, change your mind mid-sentence, explain your constraints, and have AI turn that messy speech into a clean, structured prompt?
That's exactly what I'm testing with Typeless, an AI-powered voice dictation tool now available on Linux. Using Ubuntu, VS Code, OpenAI Codex, and a real Python project, I put voice-first programming through a series of practical coding tests to see whether speaking to an AI coding agent actually improves the development workflow.
Typeless isn't just traditional speech-to-text. It's designed to remove filler words, resolve spoken corrections, eliminate repetition, and organize natural speech into polished text. Instead of spending time writing the perfect prompt, you can explain what you want naturally and review the cleaned-up instructions before sending them to your AI agent.
But here's the bigger question: does a cleaner prompt actually produce better code, or does it just make prompting more convenient?
To investigate, I start with a controlled A/B test using the same Python project, the same Codex model, and the same coding request. One prompt comes from basic dictation, while the other goes through Typeless. The task involves updating a filter_active_users function to preserve active-user filtering, sort by last name, remove duplicates, and add a docstring.
The goal is to compare how both inputs communicate the requirements and whether that affects what Codex produces.
Next, I test Typeless in a more realistic coding workflow. A Python task-duration calculator crashes when a project has zero tasks. Rather than typing a short bug-fix instruction, I explain the problem aloud, consider returning zero or None, then clarify why zero is the correct fallback for the application's stats widget. Can Typeless preserve that final decision and the reasoning behind it?
Then comes the messy prompt test: modifying an API login endpoint to add rate limiting and failed-login logging while respecting two critical constraints. The existing user model must remain untouched, and sensitive information like passwords and authentication tokens must never appear in logs.
This is where voice-first coding gets interesting. A useful AI prompt isn't just about describing a feature. It's also about communicating architectural restrictions, security requirements, exceptions, and intent without losing important details.
I also explore Typeless's Ask Anything feature, which lets you select text such as an error traceback and ask for an explanation without copying it into another chat.
Of course, voice coding has limitations. Exact commands, variable names, syntax, and small edits can still be easier with a keyboard. Technical term recognition, privacy claims, Linux compatibility, and working in shared spaces also deserve attention.
Typeless says it offers zero cloud data retention and doesn't train on user dictation data. I also look at how the Linux workflow fits into VS Code, terminals, and everyday development.
Ultimately, this isn't about whether AI can transcribe speech. It's about whether speaking naturally helps developers communicate more complete requirements to coding agents like Codex, without sacrificing accuracy or control.
Typeless offers a free plan with its core features, and the video also covers an available $5 discount for heavier usage.
Would you use voice input for programming, or is the keyboard still the better tool for working with AI coding agents?
