Description

🌊 Two thousand metres beneath the South China Sea, there is no light at all. The pressure is roughly two hundred times what you feel at the surface. And the seafloor is leaking. China is building a permanent station down there — six scientists, living on the seabed for a month at a time, targeting 2030. 🔥 The reason is buried in the mud around it: methane hydrate. Ice that catches fire when you hold a flame to it. One cubic metre releases about 164 cubic metres of natural gas, and the deposits under that sea have been estimated at around 80 billion tonnes of oil equivalent — more than the proven oil reserves of the entire Persian Gulf. 🛰️ It's being called a deep-sea space station, and that name is more literal than it sounds. The design borrows life support from crewed space missions, pressure hulls from deep submersibles, and survival systems from deep mining. Structurally, the ocean is the harder environment — the International Space Station holds back one atmosphere of pressure. This holds back two hundred. The only permanently operating undersea research base on Earth sits at twenty metres, off Florida. Two thousand metres has been empty for sixty years. It isn't going to stay empty. 💬 Comment your country and the time on your clock right now — somebody's watching this at three in the morning, and I'd like to know who. 👍 A like genuinely helps this video reach more people. 🔔 Subscribe for more of the world's most impossible engineering. 📩 Contact Us: [email protected] — ⚠️ This video uses AI-generated visuals for illustration purposes.
