Description

Your backend might look fast in development, but one hidden database mistake can destroy its performance in production. In this video, I break down the N+1 query problem, one of the most common performance issues in backend development, and show how a tiny ORM change can turn dozens of unnecessary database queries into just one efficient query. Using a practical Django ORM example, you’ll see how innocent-looking code like `Post.objects.all()` can quietly trigger a new database query for every related object you access. With only a few records, you may never notice it. But once your application starts handling real production data, those extra queries can quickly become a serious bottleneck. Then we fix it using `select_related()` and see how Django can retrieve the required related data in a single SQL JOIN instead of repeatedly hitting the database. If you work with Django, Laravel, Ruby on Rails, Spring Boot, SQLAlchemy, or almost any ORM, understanding N+1 queries is one of those backend concepts that can save you from painful performance problems later. One small query change can mean the difference between: 51 database queries → 1 query Slow production pages → dramatically faster responses A hidden performance problem → an optimized backend If you're learning backend development, Django, databases, ORMs, or web performance, this is a problem you should know before your application reaches production.
