Description
A British tank enthusiast turned a Cold War-era Chieftain — a 55-ton armored vehicle powered by a 750-horsepower diesel engine — into working farm equipment, fitting it with a hydraulic attachment and an agricultural plow to till roughly an acre of land at Britain’s National Ploughing Championship. In a side-by-side comparison, a conventional modern tractor got stuck in the soil while the tank kept moving steadily through it, using just over 100 liters of fuel in the process. It’s a striking, almost literal “swords into plowshares” moment — and it’s not without precedent. After World War Two, Britain genuinely repurposed retired tanks for agriculture: in 1947, Lincolnshire farming contractor Robert Crawford bought a surplus Sherman tank for £350, stripped its turret and armor, and used it to pull a deep-digging plow that no commercial machine of the era could match.
Vickers-Armstrong even built a dedicated tank-tractor hybrid called the “Shervick” for a major government farming project in East Africa. This modern demonstration isn’t just a viral stunt — it’s a direct callback to a real, largely forgotten chapter of post-war British agricultural history.
