Description
In this video, I explain how engine knock sensors work, what they detect, and a simple test you can perform to determine whether a knock sensor is functioning properly.
Knock sensors play a critical role in protecting your engine from detonation (spark knock), which occurs when combustion happens at the wrong time or in an uncontrolled manner inside the combustion chamber. The sensor detects abnormal engine vibrations caused by these pressure spikes and sends a signal to the engine control module (ECM), allowing ignition timing to be adjusted before serious damage occurs.
Common causes of engine knock include:
• Carbon deposits that become hot enough to ignite the air-fuel mixture before the spark plug fires (pre-ignition)
• Low-octane fuel that is unable to withstand normal cylinder pressures
• Excessive ignition timing advance
• Lean air-fuel mixtures
• Overheating engines
• Faulty EGR systems
• Excessive boost pressure in turbocharged engines
• Incorrect spark plugs or spark plugs with an improper heat range
• High compression ratios combined with inadequate fuel octane
• Oil contamination in the combustion chamber
• Cooling system problems that increase combustion temperatures
In this video, I'll show you how knock sensors detect these abnormal combustion events and demonstrate a quick diagnostic test that can help determine whether your knock sensor is working correctly before replacing parts unnecessarily.

Welcome to Everyday Projects — my little channel of curiosity, chaos, and creativity. If it’s mechanical, electrical, old, broken, or just plain interesting, chances are I’m tearing into it.
I fix my own cars, renovate homes, wander into the wilderness for quick adventures, and drag home the forgotten engines and gadgets most people would leave for scrap.
From basic vehicle maintenance and repairs around the home to reviving neglected machines, to tackling the kind of DIY repairs that make life a little more hands-on, this channel is all about learning by doing — even when the outcome is a surprise.
So if you love practical know-how, off-grid adventures, oddball projects, and the joy of figuring things out one bolt at a time… You’re in the right place.
