Pound for Pound, the Piranha Has the Strongest Bite of Any Fish

But the famous scene of piranhas stripping a cow to the bone is not in his book, and the book itself says cattle wading into piranha water are usually left alone. One of his own naturalists, Leo Miller of the American Museum of Natural History, reported that dead birds thrown into the water whole simply floated away. This video retries the piranha on the evidence: what Roosevelt actually wrote on the way to the River of Doubt, the teeth that lock together into a single blade and are replaced one whole side at a time, the pacu cousins with human-like teeth and the tambaqui that plants the Amazon forest, the 2005 study showing piranhas school because they are afraid, and the 2011 recordings of piranhas barking before they bite. Then the charge the legend got right: the black piranha bites with about 72 pounds of force, roughly 30 times its own body weight, the strongest bite measured in any bony fish. Plus where piranhas really bite people, why it is usually a single bite on a foot near a nest in a dammed reservoir, and how the monster came to America through the movies and the aquarium trade. 👍 Subscribe for a new wildlife documentary every week. #piranha #piranhas #redbelliedpiranha #blackpiranha #wildlife #wildlifedocumentary #animalfacts #naturedocumentary #amazon #amazonriver #theodoreroosevelt #riverofdoubt #fish #pantanal #natureeducation
