FANNIE MASEMOLA IS BACK! South Africa’s National Police Commissioner has returned to the SAPS after President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted his suspension following the withdrawal of charges against him.
In his first address after returning to office, Masemola made it clear that his focus is on the future of the police service, not revenge. But what does his return mean for the SAPS, the controversial Medicare24 tender and the ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry?
In this Miss Media report, we break down Masemola’s speech, the circumstances surrounding his suspension, why the charges against him were withdrawn, and the major promises he has made to South Africans.
HERE IS WHAT WE COVER:
• Masemola’s return to office after six months on precautionary suspension
• The R228 million Medicare24 tender at the centre of the charges
• The withdrawal of charges under the Public Finance Management Act
• President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to lift the suspension
• Masemola’s message about unity and not seeking revenge
• His plans to improve police stations, staffing and frontline policing
• Political violence and security ahead of local government elections
• The Madlanga Commission and the future of police accountability
• The fight against organised crime, corruption and gender-based violence
Masemola’s charges were withdrawn by the National Prosecuting Authority, and the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court formally withdrew them on 22 September 2026. President Ramaphosa lifted his suspension on 16 October, allowing him to resume his duties on 19 October.
The withdrawal of the charges means the prosecution against Masemola on those charges will not proceed. This report distinguishes the withdrawal of the case from a finding of guilt or innocence.
THE BIG QUESTION: Can Masemola restore public trust in the SAPS, and will his return bring stability or more questions about accountability?
