His bail proceedings have been postponed until Monday following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport for allegedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The former ANC North West treasurer appeared in court after the commission pursued criminal charges over his alleged failure to comply with its instructions to testify and provide relevant information. During the bail proceedings, the State raised concerns about Carrim's travel plans, questioning whether he intended to return to South Africa. Prosecutors pointed to the alleged absence of a return ticket and the amount of luggage he was carrying when he was arrested shortly before boarding an international flight. Carrim told the court that he does have a return ticket. The State also requested more time to verify his residential address after the court heard that four different addresses needed to be checked. His bail proceedings have been postponed until Monday, meaning Carrim is expected to remain in custody over the weekend. The court has not yet determined whether he will be granted bail. Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has welcomed Carrim's arrest, saying it hopes the action sends a strong warning to witnesses who disregard the commission's authority. According to the commission, Carrim was identified as a person of interest in October 2025 and subpoenaed to testify and provide information and documents relevant to its investigation into alleged criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system. He appeared before the commission on 9 and 10 March 2026 but did not return for further testimony scheduled for April, June and July, citing medical reasons. The commission said charges were pursued after his failure to appear on 14 August and repeated failures to provide required information. With the commission nearing the end of its work, attention is now turning to the legal consequences of Carrim's alleged failure to comply and the questions surrounding his business dealings with controversial businessman Cat Matlala and tender tycoon Morgan Maumela. WATCH UNTIL THE END and tell us what you think. 🔴 THE BIG QUESTIONS: • Should Suliman Carrim be granted bail? • Do the State's concerns about his travel plans justify opposing his release? • Is this arrest a warning to other Madlanga Commission witnesses? • What should happen when witnesses allegedly fail to comply with a commission's instructions? 💬 COMMENT BELOW with your views. 👍 LIKE this video if you want more South African political news and breaking court updates. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE to Miss Media for the latest Madlanga Commission developments, police corruption investigations, court proceedings and political accountability stories.
