Inside Bastogne, some men are making flapjacks with flour and lard from an abandoned bakery. Others are wrapping burlap bags around their feet because they don't have the winter overshoes they were supposed to have. And in a makeshift hospital, wounded men are lying on blankets spread over sawdust.
